One of the most prestigious amateur golf events of the season gets under way today at Bonneville Golf Course when the Salt Lake City Amateur is played.
The 36-hole tourney brings most of the state's top amateurs to Bonneville for a tournament second only to the State Amateur in terms of prestige.Among the players to watch are defending champion David Summerhays, three-time winner Todd Barker, and former champs Kurt Bosen, Doug Bybee and Rich Rawdin. Several top collegiate golfers will be playing including Utah's Marty Romney and Paul Phillips and BYU's Ryan Rhees and Summerhays.
Also besides the championship flight golfers, three more flights of golfers will compete.
For the first time, the tourney will employ shotgun starts at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Sunday's tee times will be the same.
"We feel we can get them around quicker this way," said Bonneville pro Dick Kramer. "We were also able to get a few more entries this way."
