Joel M. Harris, a University of Utah chemistry professor, will receive an award and a $4,000 stipend from the American Chemical Society.

Harris' award will be the Analytical Chemistry Award in Chemical Instrumentation for his pioneering work in the field. He has delivered more than 100 invited papers at scientific meetings and universities, and with his students, published more than 90 scientific papers. He won the U.'s Distinguished Research Award in 1988.He is a former consultant to the State Department on verification of the Chemical Warfare Treaty and to the Department of Energy for the Human Genome Initiative.
