Johnny Thunders, a founding member of the 1970s rock 'n' roll band the New York Dolls, died of an overdose of cocaine and methadone, according to the coroner's office.

"He died at his own hands by taking too much drugs," John Gagliano, chief investigator for the coroner's office, said Friday.Gagliano said tests completed last week found substantial amounts of both drugs. Thunders, whose real name was John Anthony Genzale, was found dead April 24 in a French Quarter hotel room littered with methadone packets and a syringe floating in the toilet.

"Some people just keep taking drugs, they just don't know how much their body can stand," Gagliano said.
