The Senate approved an Energy and Water Development appropriations bill Wednesday carrying $34.6 million for work on the Bonneville Unit of the Central Utah water project.

The figure was $7 million higher than the House approved last month. The vote was 96-3. Sen. Jake Garn, R-Utah and Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, both voted for the bill.

Garn, a member of the Appropriations Committee, added the $7 million during committee consideration of the bill. He also inserted language directing the Secretary of The Interior to award contracts next year for the Sixth Water aqueduct, the last major link between the Bonneville Unit water sources and Wasatch Front communities.
