Richfield will lose a large grocery store but will gain the city's largest retail outlet through the expansion of the local K mart.
Storehouse Markets will close, according to Lou Nielson of Barlow, Nielson Associates, administrator of the Richfield Plaza Shopping Center. The target date for closure is July 31, but it could extend beyond that date, he said.K mart will expand into the building that has housed Storehouse Markets. About four to six months will be needed to complete architectural plans, bidding and construction of the expansion, according to Michelle Deland, spokeswoman for K mart in Troy, Mich.
The new portion will open some time next year.
K mart, one of the original occupants of the Richfield Plaza Shopping Center, opened its doors in the fall of 1981. It will be the largest retail outlet in Richfield following expansion, it was reported.
Storehouse has been at the Plaza location for about a year in the building that formerly housed Dove's Double Discount grocery store. That chain went bankrupt and its owner was found guilty of multiple charges of failure to pay state sales taxes from operations of several stores in Utah.
The closure of Storehouse Markets will leave only one major market chain in the area. Albertsons is located between 300 and 400 South on Main Street. That building previously housed two large grocery chains. Safeway was the first to locate there, followed by Farmer Jacks, and then Albertsons.
