The University of Utah has established a new institute to coordinate its astrophysics, atmospheric science and cosmic rays research.
The U. Board of Trustees approved Monday the High Energy Astrophysics Institute in the Department of Physics.Creating the institute will establish a national facility for cosmic ray research in Utah and will provide the necessary infrastructure for other related research projects, said Eugene C. Loh, professor of physics and director of the Utah Fly's Eye Detector Program.
The U. established the Fly's Eye Detector Program at Dugway Proving Ground in 1975 to track and study cosmic ray bombardments of the Earth's atmosphere.
