Tasmania remains the only Australian state where male homosexuality is illegal after the state's Upper House rejected decriminalization measures.

The rejection by the Upper House's 19-member Legislative Council on Wednesday followed heated debate, in which one member said the death penalty for homosexuals should be introduced.The decision means Tasmania, an island off the southeast mainland, remains the only Australian state where sex between adult males remains a criminal offense.
