University of Utah student Kristan Jacobsen has been named the Region 9 College Photographer of the Year by the National Press Photographers Association.

Jacobsen, 24, is a photography intern at the Deseret News. Besides her first place in the portfolio competition, which brought her the top honor, she also took all three places in the news photography division and first place for a feature photo.Photo editors and photographers from the Orange County (Calif.) Register judged the competition, which drew entries from five universities.

In their comments, the judges said Ja-cobsen's entry was the "clear, hands-down" winner.

Utah State University student Marc Crandall took third place in the portfolio category and placed first in the sports and picture-story categories.

Besides her current internship with the Deseret News, Jacobsen has completed photography internships at the Salt Lake Tribune and the Standard-Examiner in Ogden. The National Press Photographers Association is open to all news photographers. Region 9 encompasses two Canadian provinces, Manitoba and Alberta, as well as North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Utah, Colorado, Idaho and Montana.
