One of the FBI's most wanted criminals was apprehended in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, thanks to a security guard

who saw the man's picture in the newspaper. The security guard working at the Social Security Office, 158 S. 200 West, told police he saw Augustine V. Gallegos, 42, and recognized his name from a newspaper article saying Gallegos was wanted by the FBI, according to a police report.

When police arrived at 9:51 a.m., the man claimed to have another name, but his Social Security number and physical characteristics matched those of Gallegos, the report says.

After questioning by police, he admitted his identity and was arrested.

The Deseret News printed information about Gallegos on July 19 as part of its weekly report on the FBI's most-wanted criminals and suspects.

Gallegos originally was imprisoned in 1980 for manslaughter. After an escape attempt, he absconded while on parole in 1989.

Gallegos has an extensive criminal record that includes burglary, theft and manslaughter. The FBI considered him armed and dangerous.

Agent Tim Screen said Gallegos is the eighth arrest credited to the local media this year. Screen said the agency has publicized the names and photos of 20 criminals since the most-wanted program began. "The percentage is incredible," Screen said. "The public and the media are to be commended."

Screen said the security guard probably will remain anonymous, but the FBI will make sure he receives the reward money. Up to $5,000 was offered for the apprehension of Gallegos.

People responding with information about most wanted criminals featured weekly by the FBI or any other criminals or crimes can remain completely anonymous if they wish, Screen said.
