As well as September storms, classically inclined Utahns can expect the usual deluge of music and dance along the Wasatch Front, most of it from local tributaries.
Which is to say the state's major arts organizations, the Utah Symphony, Ballet West, Utah Opera, Repertory Dance Theatre and the Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, are each offering full seasons for 1991-92, supplemented by a number of campus series and Temple Square's weekly lineup of free concerts and recitals.Otherwise the last appear to be few in number, most of the big-name soloists being scheduled to perform with the symphony as opposed to a purely solo setting. Even singers Jessye Norman and Frederica von Stade will be heard in a largely choral-and/or-orchestral context rather than in the recital hall or opera house.
Indeed, of Utah Symphony guests only guitarist Christopher Parkening and Gina Bachauer winners Gail Niwa and David Buechner can also be heard in a more intimate framework - all in November, as it happens. As can Utah Symphony music director Joseph Silverstein, once again much in evidence locally - and not just on the podium.
However, the worst bunch-ups of dates - or best, I suppose, depending on your point of view - fall in October and December. Particularly Oct. 19, where Salt Lakers can take in any of four orchestral performances, three of them within a half-block of one another, and Dec. 2, 6 and 7. Especially for early-music buffs, it will not be an easy choice between the visiting Tallis Scholars at First Baptist Church and the annual - and traditionally very well attended - Vivaldi Candlelight Concert at St. Mark's Cathedral.
As for other composers, between now and December we can also expect a lot of Mozart, reminding us that this year marks the bicentenary of his death. In a more contemporary vein, there will also be tributes to Robert Cundick, retiring after 26 years as Tabernacle organist, and Milton Babbitt, being brought in as this year's David P. Gardner lecturer at the University of Utah.
Visiting chamber groups are also well represented, as is the rising generation of operatic performers, via both Anne Ewers' first season as general director of Utah Opera and a statewide tour in January by San Francisco's Western Opera Theatre, this time in Verdi's "La Traviata."
Nor does there appear to be any shortage the month before of "Nutcrackers" and "Messiahs." But that's one deluge Utahns have come to expect, to the point where there will undoubtedly be more before the year is out.
