Robbers stole $50,000 from the Cheers bar after knocking an employee unconscious and breaking open two safe-deposit boxes with bolt cutters, police reported.

Two men entered the bar in the early morning hours of Sept. 7, a police report said. They knocked out an employee with a liquor bottle and handcuffed him to a food preparation table in the kitchen, the report said. The manager also was bound in handcuffs, the report said.

Cheers, formerly the Bull & Finch Pub, has been a tourist spot since the early 1980s when NBC launched its popular television show "Cheers," a comedy series set inside the bar on Beacon Street.
