KCNR station owner Citadel Communications has promoted Van N. Williams to the news director position for "News Radio 860 AM."

"Van has done a great job with his duties on KCNR," said Stuart Stanek, KCNR/KLZX general manager. "And I'm sure he will serve us well as KCNR evolves."Williams started at KCNR in November 1990, in the middle of the Persian Gulf crisis. He has worked in radio for six years, and this is his first management job.

"Citadel has been an innovative leader," Williams said. "First going with the CNN Headline News format, and now naming the first black news director in the Salt Lake market. You've got to respect a company like that."

The listeners for the all-news station are primarily adults between the ages of 25 and 64.

- KLZX (FM-93.3) - Greg Nielsen of Salt Lake City won the station's recent "Putt for Wheels" contest by sinking a putt in the third round of the finals. He won a 1991 Nissan 4X4 truck.

Nielsen was one of 116 people who made it to the final competition. Qualifiers had to putt on the portable "Z93 putting green."

The station is planning on holding a third annual putting contest next year.

- KISN (AM-570) - Steve Klauke of Aurora, Ill., has joined the station as the new producer and also a personality on the "SportsTalk" show with Dave Blackwell and Ron Boone. He basically replaces Kurt Wilson, who is now doing play-by-play action at Weber State University.

Klauke spent more than six years as the sports director at WMRO-AM radio, where he hosted a nightly three-hour sports talk show. He also did play-by-play broadcasts for Illinois high school collegiate and semi-pro sports. In addition, he did the voice work for a men's fast-pitch softball team, which has made many visits to Salt Lake City over the years.

For the past 28 months, Klauke has done free-lance work for WKKD in Aurora as well as various other radio outlets, such as the national networks in Canada, Bermuda and Australia.

He is the producer of "Sports-Talk," from 5-7 p.m. weeknights and will begin his own one-hour talk show starting at 4 p.m. weekdays on Sept. 16. He was reportedly one of more than 40 applicants for the sports position.

- In other KISN (AM-97.1) news, radio veteran Gary "Wooley" Waldron has left the station. He was both an afternoon radio personality and the program director. His Utah radio career dates back to the days of the old KNAK in 1965.

He has been replaced as program director by Randy Rose, formerly at KRSP-FM and most recently having worked in California radio. Waldron's on-air job is still open. Hopefully, more details later.

- KLO (AM-1430) - The Denver Broncos are back in Utah! KLO, an Ogden radio station, will air the Bronco games this season.
