A death row inmate who pleaded guilty to the drug-related slayings of a couple was granted a stay of execution early Friday by the U.S. Supreme Court, the state said.

David Michael Clark, 32, was scheduled to die by injection shortly after midnight, but his execution was put on hold while Clark's appeal to the nation's highest court could be heard.
