Prime Minister John Major made a surprise one-day visit to Northern Ireland Monday and strongly condemned last week's Teebane Cross attack by the Irish Republic Army that killed seven people.

Major's arrival coincided with a series of IRA bomb alerts in north and west Belfast, police said, five of which proved to be hoaxes. At midday, police were still investigating telephone warnings of two firebombs in Belfast, and two other bomb alerts in Lisburn, to the west of Belfast.
