Robert Wussler resigned as president of Comsat Video Enterprises, the majority owner of the Denver Nuggets, the company announced today.
But the move is not expected to affect Comsat's role in directing the Nuggets, officials said.In a statement today, Wussler said that running the Comsat division that allows hotel guests to rent movies in their rooms has been a "terrific experience." But he added, "it's time to explore new business opportunities."
He said Comsat has decided its priorities do not include multichannel, pay-per-view program distribution to homes. "This is an area which I want to pursue vigorously," he said.
Wussler will continue as a consultant to Comsat. The resignation is effective Jan. 31.
Wussler became head of the video division in 1989. Before that he was executive vice president of Turner Broadcasting System Inc. for nearly 10 years, and headed CBS Sports and the CBS Television Network.
Under Wussler, Comsat Video Enterprises purchased a majority interest in the Nuggets.
The Rocky Mountain News and The Denver Post reported today that Comsat intends to remain majority owner of the team, even though Wussler was the driving force behind the company's purchase of the NBA franchise Oct. 21, 1989.
