The lawyer for Abimael Guzman says the Shining Path guerrilla leader can't get a fair trial before military judges.
Guzman was opening his defense Thursday on the fourth day of his military trial in Lima, Peru. His lawyer, Alfredo Crespo, told reporters Wednesday that he had asked to have the trial transferred from a military courtroom to a civil one."No one can be judge and part of the war at the same time," said Crespo. "My client can only be tried by a court which is impartial, autonomous and independent. The whole process has been flawed since the beginning."
Guzman, 57, was arrested in Lima on Sept. 12.
