Eduard Shevardnadze overwhelmingly won election as Georgia's parliament chairman, the top government post in this strife-torn former Soviet republic, preliminary results showed Monday.

The former Soviet foreign minister won about 95 percent of the votes cast Sunday in the Caucasus Mountains nation, said Merab Alsksidze, chairman of the Central Election Committee.
