Charles Edward Haggerty, 79, passed away October 10, 1992 at University Hospital.
He was born Sept. 8, 1913 in Eldora, West Virginia, a son of Roland S. and Lula Rutherford Haggerty. Married Beth Leone Knudsen, Sept. 12, 1938 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She died Sept. 2, 1979. He married Lenore Dowden Dec. 7, 1979 in Lafayette, Indiana. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in 1980. He attended Brigham Young University and the University of Illinois receiving degrees and honors from both universities. He was director of the Danville (Illinois) Public Library for 21 years. He also served as professor of English and Religion, and Genealogy. He was founder of the Illiana Genealogical Society. As a poet, he has had several works published nationally. He was a member of the LDS Church and held many positions including counselor to Pres. Smoot of the Northern States Mission, first bishop of the Danville Ward, a high councilor, Scoutmaster, teacher and temple worker.He is survived by his wife, of Salt Lake City; sons, David L., Ogden, Utah; Larry R. and John W., both of Salt Lake; daughter, Susan K. Haggerty, Salt Lake; 11 grandchildren, and a great-grandson. Preceded in death by a daughter, JoAnn H. Taylor, Sept. 1, 1984.
Funeral services Friday, October 16th, 12 noon in the Salt Lake LDS 21st Ward, 2nd Avenue & K Street. Friends may call at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, Thursday evening 6-8 p.m., and Friday at the Ward, one hour prior to services. Interment, Lehi City Cemetery.
