Rock star Sting, who began his career as a teacher, donned a hat and gown Friday in his hometown of Newcastle, England, to receive an honorary degree from the University of Northumbria.

A university spokesman said the honorary doctorate of music was awarded in recognition of Sting's contribution to music and his campaigns to protect South American rainforests. The 41-year-old star, the former lead singer of the Police, attended the ceremony with his wife, Trudi Styler. The couple tied the knot in August after 10 years together and three children.

Sting (original name Gordon Sumner) has put his musical career on hold lately and instead worked to publicize the plight of Indians living in the endangered rainforests.
