Rush-hour traffic contributed to the capture of a 14-year-old who led police on a chase through west Salt Lake City about 5 p.m. Thursday.

An officer spotted a stolen car about 1400 West and 300 South and attempted to discreetly follow the car, said Salt Lake Police Lt. Dennis Tueller. The young driver noticed the officer and "took off," he said. The teen attempted to enter I-15, but rush-hour traffic was bumper to bumper. The youth tried to pass another car entering freeway traffic but side-swiped it instead. No one was injured, Tueller said.

One of the tires on the stolen car blew out, and eventually the teen stopped the car against a guard rail, he said. "Officers were pretty close behind," he said, "and they (the occupants of the stolen car) didn't have an opportunity to flee."

All six teenagers were taken into custody, but only the driver is likely to be charged, Tueller said.
