- Women's tennis - BYU's Jennifer Saret upheld her No. 1 seeding and emerged the winner of the Lady Ute Invitational on Saturday with an impressive win over Utah's Heidi Chinchiolo. Saret beat Chinchiolo, the No. 5 seed, 6-0, 6-0, in the finals at the Eccles Tennis Center on the Utah campus.

In doubles, Alison Bradford and Rebecca Smith won an all-Ute final, beating Chinchiolo and Kristin Longson, 6-0, 6-3. The event, organized by Utah women's coach John Tsumas, brought together women's teams from Utah, BYU, Utah State and Weber State.- Men's golf - After the first round of play at the "Stanford Shootout" at Stanford University, Utah finished in a tie for 22nd place out of 24 teams. The action continues Sunday at 8:30 a.m.

- Volleyball - Utah dropped four games to San Diego State Saturday night: 6-15, 11-15, 15-9, and 8-15. The Utes are now 13-8 for the season, 1-4 in WAC play. Mikki Kane-Barton paced the Utes with 16 kills on 37 attempts with four errors. Defensively, Denise Rathbun and Debbie Gibby-Smith each had 15 digs. The Utes lost to No. 25 Fresno State Friday: 15-11, 11-15, 9-15, and 15-17.

BYU

- Women's volleyball - In a showdown between the two undefeated WAC volleyball teams Saturday night, BYU dispatched the visiting Fresno State squad 15-10, 15-8, 15-1. The ninth-ranked Cougars have a 5-0 record, and are 14-3 overall. The Bulldogs drop to 4-1, and 10-7. BYU aced San Diego State 15-8, 15-10, 15-11 Friday.

- Women's cross country - BYU grabbed the team title and Cougar harriers Tonya Todd and Dorota Buczkowska swept the first two individual places at the Golden Mustang SLO Cross Country Invitational Saturday morning.

The seventh-ranked Cougar squad posted 77 points to dominate the 13-team field. Todd, who won the Stanford invitational two weeks ago, covered the distance in 17:02. She was shadowed by Buczkowska in 17:19. Heather Witney of Springville came in 11th in 17:50.
