Weber State
- Montana's Lady Griz volleyball team defeated Weber State Thursday in a three-game match at Missoula, Mont. Scores were: 15-8, 15-13, 18-16. Weber State drops to 2-12 overall, 1-2 in Big Sky action while Montana improves to 5-9 overall, 2-1 in Big Sky play.
Senior outside hitter Lorna Perrin led the Wildcats with 10 kills and 12 digs. Middle blockers Alison Borgman, Kristen Rosario and Marvett Dickamore each had six blocks in the losing effort. Weber State will travel to Bozeman on Saturday against Montana State.
BYU
- Two freshman tennis recruits have signed on with BYU coach Ann Valentine's BYU squad Fall Semester.
Jennifer Saret, 17, Quezon City, the Philippines, played in this year's U.S. Open junior tournament. She lost in the first round of singles to 16th-seeded Sonya Jeyaseelan of Canada 7-5, 6-3, but won the first round of doubles against standout juniors Anne Mall and Ann Miller 6-4, 6-3 before bowing to the 8th-seeded pair of Jeyaseelan and Caralina Cristea of Romania 7-6, 2-6, 7-6. Cristea was seeded third among juniors in singles.
Michelle Domanico, 18, Valentine's other recruit, is a 5-4 state champion from Bonanza High School, Las Vegas, Nev. She comes to BYU with a long list of athletic and academic achievements. In singles, she is ranked No. 1 in Nevada and No. 4 in the Intermountain Section, and in doubles, is No. 1 in the Section. She captured the zone singles championship and the state singles titles in 1991 and 1992. MVP and captain of her tennis team at Bonanza and Female Athlete of the Year for two years, she was also MVP and captain of Bonanza's state championship soccer team. She was named prep All-American in both tennis and soccer, and was selected Prince Honorable Mention All-America in tennis. A high honors graduate from Bonanza in 1992 with a 3.96 GPA, she was named Distinguished Scholar Student, and was given the Scholar/Athlete Award.
Four two years running, the Las Vegas Review-Journal named her Best Female Athlete of the Year.
- Two of the nation's top players face each other in BYU's first tennis match of the year in Flagstaff, Ariz., Saturday.
Leading the way for the Cougar netters will be returning top seeds Mark Quinney, a senior from Eugene, Ore., and Herman Vandecasteele, a junior from Kortrijk, Belgium. Marco Pacheco of Mexico City, Mexico, and Micah Rideout of Salt Lake City should also make big contributions.
Quinney and NAU's Michael Tebbutt, both ranked nationally last season, will meet for the first time Saturday. Both players were invited to play in the National Clay Court Championships recently, a tournament featuring the top players in the country. Tebbutt's loss in the finals at the Clay Courts could earn him a top-10 ranking to begin the season.
