Evans & Sutherland Computer Corp. of Salt Lake City and Sun Microsystems Computer Corp. of Mountain View, Calif., introduced Tuesday what they call a "breakthrough" 3D graphics accelerator family for the APARC/Solaris platform, the Freedom Series.

A spokesman for the two companies said the Freedom Series delivers the industry's fastest graphics, offering more than twice the 3D graphics speed of any other workstation. The two companies will market the new series jointly, but final sales will be from Evans with deliveries beginning next month.

"This signals a dramatic shift in the direction of 3D graphics, said Rod Rougelot, president of Evans & Sutherland. "For the first time, the industry's leading 3D graphics will be available on the industry's leading volume platform - we're literally taking this to the whole world."
