John William McDonald, age 68, died October 19, 1992 in San Diego, California.
He was born March 31, 1924 in Logan, Utah to Lloyd C. and Myrtle Peterson McDonald. He married Neva in Salt Lake City on March 3, 1950.He graduated from Utah State University with a degree in physics and did graduate work at the University of Utah. He worked as a reporter and editor for the Salt lake Tribune and for the Deseret News before moving to Los Alamos, New Mexico where he became a technical writer for the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratories. He left Los Alamos in 1960 to work for the State Department, and from 1963-1966 he loved in Peru organizing and communicating training programs to Peruvian personnel for the North Carolina University Agricultural Mission. He took part in two Geneva conferences, one in 1958 on the peaceful uses of atomic energy, and the other from 1962-1963 as part of the Agency For Areas. He returned to Los Alamos in 1966 until his retirement in 1987 as editor of Defense Science. In 1987 he traveled to Africa for the Food and Agricultural Organization of the U.N. as an investigative reporter. Soon after retiring, John and his wife, Neva, moved to San Diego for health reasons where John continued to work on various projects. He spent a year as historian for the Navel Ocean Systems Center, and in 1991 he finished a project as Senior Definer and Essay Author of the Dictionary of Science and Technology put out by Harcourt, Brace and Jovanodich.
He is survived by his wife, Neva, of San Diego, California; one son, Harvey and Marylou Gates of Lyons, Colorado; one daughter, Susan and Norbert Duckwitz, of Orem, Utah. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, three brothers, Lloyd C. and Roma McDonald of Seattle, Washington; Dean M. and Alene McDonald of Genola, Utah; Lee R. and Laura McDonald of Smithfield, Utah; and three sisters, Ellen and Bill Wright of Kaysville, Utah; Thelma and Clair Hulse of Roy, Utah; Ruth and Louie Meyers of Columbus, Ohio.
Funeral services will be held in Logan, Utah on Saturday, October 24, 1992 in the Allen-Hall Mortuary Chapel, 34 East Center St. at 2:00 p.m. Friends may call one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery.
