The Green Bay Packers waived defensive tackle Keith Millard Friday after he broke his hand in last week's 17-6 loss to Cleveland, and he subsequently announced his retirement.

Millard, a former Minnesota Vikings' star, played less than a month for the Packers before breaking his hand in two places. Millard, 30, will receive an undisclosed settlement from the Packers.Millard had originally said he would be fitted with a cast and continue to play, but further X-rays found the injury to be more serious than originally diagnosed. He expressed reservations about going through another long rehabilitation stint, a factor that led to his retirement.

"One thing I won't miss is the injuries and the ups and downs," he said.
