With 2:36 remaining in the third quarter the Mountain Crest Mustangs and Bear River Bears called it a night after two serious injuries occurred.
Bear River's Ryan Castano suffered a head injury - he was knocked unconscious in the process - early in the third quarter and in the final minutes of the same quarter Kenneth Thigpen of Mountain Crest sustained a compound fracture to his right knee. Both were taken to Logan Regional Hospital. Castano had regained consciousness before leaving for the hospital.The first injury delayed play about 20 minutes and the second another 35 minutes. It was after the second lengthy delay that Mountain Crest coach Dan Cox and Bear River coach Doug Perry mutually decided to end the contest as a 23-0 Mountain Crest victory.
Mountain Crest's first score was 41-yard touchdown run by Ryan Pond in the first quarter. Later in the quarter Korey Kohler broke free from the Mustang 6-yard line and galloped 94 yards to the end zone. The Mustangs had a 17-0 lead at halftime as Lyle Jarman added a 32-yard field goal after Kohler's TD romp.
Early in the third quarter quarterback Corey Anderson scored from 16 yards out.
The Mustangs, who are tied for first in Region 5 play with Box Elder, will meet Judge Memorial at home to begin the 3A playoffs next week.
Logan 33, Ogden 6
The Logan Grizzlies will go into the state playoffs as the region's fourth-place team as a result of winning a coin toss to break a three way tie among Sky View, Bear River and themselves. Sky View and Bear River will play for the third-place seed in a special playoff game Tuesday.
The Grizzlies were able to secure the spot after their victory over Ogden.
Logan's Greg Anderson carried 19 times for 104 yards and two touchdowns, both coming early in the first quarter. Logan capitalized on Ogden turnovers - Josh Archibald returned an interception 80 yards for a TD.
Logan quarterback Ty Kidman scored on a 1-yard run to give the Grizzlies a 26-0 halftime lead.
Ogden got its score early in the third quarter when Omar Acosta intercepted a pass and returned in 53 yards for a touchdown.
With 50 seconds left in the game Logan's Tony Guerrero scored on a 15-yard run.
Box Elder 42, Sky View 6
Joe Stuart found Ryan Shaw for 3 TD passes, including a 90-yarder, as the Bees repeatedly stung the Bobcats. Box Elder's stingy defense held Sky View to 0 yardage through the middle of the 4th quarter, when the Bees' JV squad came in, surrendering Sky View's only points.
