The town of Alvin, Texas, has honored its most famous son by renaming a stretch of Highway 288 the "Nolan Ryan Expressway."

Ryan climbed into a cherry picker Thursday to peel black plastic wrapping off the green highway sign in Brazoria County south of Houston."It is indeed an honor," said Ryan, who holds major league baseball records with seven no-hitters and 5,668 strikeouts. "It is going to be exciting to drive down 288 and see this sign."

The three-mile stretch of four-lane freeway was renamed by the Texas Legislature at the request of county and local officials.
