I am a Utahn who spent the large part of my working career in the Washington, D.C., area. In 1969 or '70, it was my pleasure to escort a U.S. senator from his apartment to a speaking engagement in Virginia.

His main concern for the future of America was that the cost of campaigning for public office had increased at such a scale and was climbing higher and higher so that soon only the independently wealthy could afford to engage in elective politics.Twenty-two years later, his prediction has been fulfilled. The irony is that ex-Sen. Wallace F. Bennett has lived to see his prophetic words fulfilled by his own son, Robert Bennett. This campaign for a Senate seat already exceeds many Utah county budgets.
