Five students from Lille, France, sneaked into the English Channel tunnel at night and walked 23 miles to England to win a bet, officials said Thursday.

The five men, age 25 to 31, entered the French end of the unfinished tunnel through ventilation pipes at 3:15 a.m. Wednesday, a public holiday in France.Wearing work overalls, they walked unchallenged through the building site, emerging 15 hours later into the arms of bemused British policemen.

They were handed to French police after convincing investigators they were not terrorists and only wanted to take up a challenge.
