Frontier Pies is the first family restaurant chain in Utah to become "smoke-free," a move the company's president says shows that restaurants can act responsibly without government mandates.
Glenn Mott, president, said the no-smoking policy in the six Frontier Pies locations in Utah is the result of guest preference rather than a moral conflict. The six locations in Salt Lake City, Ogden and Provo became smoke-free a few days ago, and the restaurant in Logan started prohibiting smoking last month.Since the company began operating in 1985, Mott said the percentage of Utahns wishing to smoke has consistently declined. That, combined with the relatively short dining times at a family restaurant, led to the company's decision.
"As business owners, we react to the wishes of our guests. While we recognize the rights of smokers and do not wish to infringe on their rights in any way, we are overwhelmed by the preponderance of the evidence showing that secondary smoke is indeed hazardous to our health," Mott said.
