MORENCI, ARIZ.Jaclyn Kae Pederson, 15, was named an All-American Scholar by the United States Achievement Academy (USAA). The USAA offers recognition to superior students excelling academically, and who are recommended by a teacher, counselor or other qualified sponsor. Jaclyn is a member of the Clifton Ward, Duncan Arizona Stake.

Alaska MISS TEEN

KOTZEBUE, ALASKA

Karmy McKay, a member of the Kotzebue Branch, Alaska Anchorage Stake, recently was named Alaska MISS TEEN 1992. She will represent her state in the 14th Annual MISS TEEN National Pageant. Participants are judged for scholastic achievement, volunteer service, talent, personal interview and formal presentation.

Featured artist

SEATTLE, WASH.

Judith Champion was the featured artist at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle. Her show featured portraits and figure studies in graphite. Her drawings have been shown in Northwest galleries and at the Church Museum of History and Art in Salt Lake City and at BYU. She is a member of the Seattle 1st Ward, Seattle Washington North Stake.

Poet inducted

OREM, UTAH

Joyce J. Merryweather, a member of the Cherry Hill 2nd Ward, Orem Utah Cherry Hill Stake, was inducted into the International Society of Poets at a recent symposium in Washington, D.C. She was also awarded the International Poet of Merit Award for 1992 for her poetry and awarded an engraved plaque. While at the symposium, she entered the annual poetry contest and won a cash award as a semifinalist.

Scouter honored

SANTA ANA, CALIF.

Bob Jones of the Santiago Creek Ward, Santa Ana California Stake, was presented the "William Spurgeon II Award" in Exploring, the first member of the Church to receive the award in the Orange County Council of Boy Scouts of America. Only one award is given each year in the Council. Brother Jones was on the original Exploring Committee with Bill Spurgeon, a renowned Scouter. Brother Jones also received his 50-year Gold Card from the Boy Scouts. He continues to serve the youth in the stake and on the Orange County Council Exploring Committee.

Receives award

MONROE, UTAH

Mary Alice Slade won the Golden Poet award from the World of Poetry, Inc., for her "Imprints," poem at the poetry convention in New York. Her entry was chosen from hundreds of other entries for the title of "Poet Laureate." She is a member of the Monroe 1st Ward, Monroe Utah Stake.

SANDY, UTAH

Chris Hardy, a priest in the Crescent 5th Ward, Sandy Utah Crescent North Stake, won an honorable mention award in the 1991-92 National PTA Reflections Contest. He was honored for his visual arts entry, a prismacolors drawing illustrating the PTA theme, "New Beginnings." His drawing is now part of the the Reflections Traveling Exhibit, which will be displayed around the United States for a year.

Doctor of year

EPHRAIM, UTAH

Dr. Kim Bateman has been named the 1993 Family Doctor of the Year by the American Academy of Family Practice. Dr. Bateman received the honor in part for his efforts in helping give medical care to the needy. He is a member of the Ephraim 3rd Ward, Ephraim Utah Stake.

Celebrates 100th

MEADVILLE, PENN.

John Klaphaak recently celebrated his 100th birthday with family and friends. He was born Nov. 4, 1892, in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and immigrated to Salt Lake City after serving in the French Mission from 1912-1914. He then settled in Ann Arbor, Mich., and married Clara Matilda Schlupp, March 17, 1921, in the Salt Lake Temple. They had three children. He lived in Ann Arbor until the death of his wife in 1981. He is known as a pioneer for the Church in Michigan, serving as a counselor in the first Detroit Stake. He has seven grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Brother Klaphaak is a member of the Meadville Ward, Erie Pennsylvania Stake.

Elected president

UTRECHT, NETHERLANDS

Wouter E. A. van Beek, a gospel doctrine teacher in the Utrecht Ward, Utrecht Netherlands Stake, has recently been elected president of the World Draughts Federation at its general assembly in France. Brother van Beek will be president for the next four years. The world federation comprises 36 federations of the game of draughts (British checkers) and checkers throughout the world.

Championship team

PORTLAND, ORE.

Kevin Jones, a member of the Cherry Park Ward, Portland Oregon Stake, played infield on the baseball team that won the Continental Amateur Baseball Association National Championship for age 16 and under. His team from the greater Portland area battled through regional tournament and then on to the national series where they won nine of 10 games to win the title.

Two young men have been selected to attend the National Young Leaders Conference, a six-day conference where they will meet with key leaders and newsmakers from the three branches of government, the me

dia and the diplomatic corps. The young men are Ryan Judkins of the Jacksonville 3rd Ward, Bloomington North Carolina Stake, and Bart Moulton of the Tetonia 2nd Ward, Driggs Idaho Stake. They were among 350 high school students selected to attend the conference.

Officer lauded

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH

Retired Maj. Gen. Ray D. Free received the Harry S. Truman Memorial Award during the Reserve Officers Association 66th National Convention in St. Paul, Minn. Brother Free, a member of the Winder 9th Ward, Salt Lake Winder Stake, was honored for "exceptional service" to the Reserve Officers Association. He is a former national president of the association and is now the chairman of the association's board of trustees.

National physician

PHOENIX, ARIZ.

Dr. Bill Hatch, a member of the Phoenix 18th Ward, Phoenix Arizona North Stake, was named USA Boxing National Physician of the Year at the organization's national meeting. Dr. Hatch travels extensively with the U.S. boxing teams and was official doctor for the recent U.S. Olympic Trials and the Boxoff.

Grand prize winner

ORANGEVALE, CALIF.

Monica Statham, 12, was recently honored as grand prize winner in the "Smoke is no Joke" billboard poster contest sponsored by the Sacramento County Health Department. Her drawing was selected from among winning entries submitted by 125 area schools. Her poster, a casket and flowers in a funeral scene with the words, "People are dying to smoke - thousands each year," was enlarged and transferred onto benchboard signs throughout the area. Monica is a Beehive in the Orangevale Ward, Citrus Heights California Stake.
