If Defense Depot Ogden's child development center can't become self-sufficient, it will be closed Feb. 26, the depot commander says.
Capt. M.D. Curry said the center, which served 15 children full time and a few part time this year, is an unacceptable burden to taxpayers and to the depot's efforts to secure work and avoid closure from military budget cuts. The expense of operating the center for fiscal 1992 was $236,270, with only $83,830 of that reimbursed by fees, Curry said.
"The bottom line is that each child was subsidized by $8,470, the majority of which was paid by the taxpayers," he said.
Curry said the subsidy is added to the depot unit cost, a key figure used in comparison with 31 other depots in the competition to stay open.
The commander said he is "not proud" of closing the center but cannot "jeopardize the many employees working for DDOU to subsidize the very few CDC patrons."
