An autograph session featuring three Utah-grown baseball players who have played in the World Series will be held Saturday at the Utah Baseball Academy at 8385 S. Allen Street in Sandy. Proceeds from the benefit, scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and last until noon, will go to the Salt Lake Valley American Legion, the sponsor of the event.
The public is invited to meet and receive autographs from Series veterans Bruce Hurst, Kelly Downs and George (The Stork) Theodore. Hurst, a native of St. George, played in the 1986 World Series as a pitcher with the Boston Red Sox. Downs, a native of Bountiful, played in the 1989 World Series as a pitcher with the San Francisco Giants. Theodore, a native of Salt Lake City, played in the 1972 World Series as a leftfielder with the New York Mets.Hurst and Downs now play for the San Diego Padres and Oakland A's, respectively.
All three players are graduates of Utah's American Legion baseball program.
Besides the autographs, a raffle will be held with dozens of prizes donated by a variety of merchants. Admission to the event is $2. For additional information call Dan Pattison, Salt Lake Valley American Legion president, at 269-1315.
