Utah State University faculty prefer the quarter system over semesters.
In a telephone poll conducted last week, the faculty voted 3-2 in favor of quarters. That was the opposite result of a vote in the Faculty Senate. On Dec. 15, the senate voted 30-27 in favor of semesters.USU is now on the quarter system, but decided to study the feasibility of a change at the suggestion of USU President George Emert, who came to the Logan school last July. The majority of Utah universities are on the quarter system.
The University of Utah is also studying conversion to semesters, but its Academic Senate isn't expected to vote on the measure until spring.
In making his decision, Emert said he'd take into consideration the opinions of the faculty. He told the Deseret News that he wanted to weigh the results of the poll and senate vote over the holidays before making his recommendation.
Any conversion decision must be approved by the USU Board of Trustees and the state Board of Regents.
