Sixty people were killed in fighting Friday on the outskirts of Tajikistan's capital and Russian troops stepped up patrols to prevent civil war from erupting again, news agencies reported.

Armored personnel carriers joined Russian troops guarding the main roads into Dushanbe, the capital of the former Soviet republic, and guards were posted at key government buildings "to prevent any subversive or terrorist acts," ITAR-Tass reported.ITAR-Tass said Russian troops and Dushanbe police were searching cars and trucks to prevent drugs or weapons from entering the city.
