President Bush's personal physician accused conservative lawmakers Sen. Jesse Helms and Rep. William Dannemeyer of hindering the fight against AIDS, a newspaper reported.
Dannemeyer, R-Calif., "takes a very subjective and prejudicial attitude" toward AIDS, Dr. Burton Lee told the New York Post.Lee blamed legislators with "very ignorant" views for blocking programs that could slow the spread of AIDS, the Post said. When pressed to specify, he named Dannemeyer and Helms, R-N.C.
In Washington, White House press secretary Marlin Fitzwater said Lee was speaking for himself.
