Recreational Equipment Corp. said it will relocate its Salt Lake sporting goods store into a new facility twice the size of its current location in Brickyard Plaza.
REI, based in Seattle, will move in April to 30,000 square feet in the former BEST building at 3285 E. 3300 South. A spokesman said it will be one of the national retailer's largest stores."Our present location is too small to adequately serve the growth of our business in Salt Lake City," said Kelly Davis, REI's Salt Lake store manager. "We need to double the size of our Salt Lake store to properly display and improve the depth of our merchandise."
REI, a consumer cooperative that annually refunds a portion of each customer's total sales for the year, specializes in outdoor gear and clothing for what it terms "individual muscle-powered rec-reation." The new space will allow it to increase inventories and incorporate amenities such as an indoor climbing wall.
Davis said the new location will also provide more parking and better access for its 49,000 members in Utah.
