Oakland Athletics slugger Jose Canseco faces up to 15 years in prison and $10,000 in fines for aggravated battery after trying to run his estranged wife's car off the road, police said.
Canseco, 27, repeatedly rammed his red 1985 Porsche into Esther Haddad Canseco's $78,000 white BMW, causing $10,000 in damage, police said after his arrest.A passerby who saw the chase dialed 911. Officers arrived in time to see Canseco spit on his wife's car window, said Metro-Dade police spokesman Ralph Fernandez.
Canseco then acted like a gentleman, officers said, and even gave them his autograph while they questioned the former Miss Miami.
Canseco, a hometown hero in Miami, was booked and released on $5,000 cash bond.
The American League's Most Valuable Player in 1988 and Rookie of the Year in 1986 has a five-year, $23.5 million contract with Oakland. But his three-year marriage has been rocky.
Canseco's arrest was only his latest run-in with the law. He was arrested for carrying a loaded pistol and has received several speeding tickets.
