James Lewis McCarrey, Jr. died February 6, 1992, in Anchorage, Alaska.
He was born January 30, 1906, in Logan, Utah, to James Lewis and Alice Maiben Squires McCarrey and married to Cora Broadbent April 3, 1939, in the Salt Lake Temple. He grew up in Richmond, Utah and began his undergraduate work at Utah State University in Logan. He continued his studies at the University of Utah where he earned a juris doctorate degree in 1940. In 1952, he was appointed U.S. Federal District Court Judge for the Territory of Alaska, continuing in that position until 1959 when Alaska became a state and he elected to return to private practice.Judge McCarrey first went to Alaska in 1931. He helped finance his schooling by selling for Utah Woolen Mills throughout the territory, where he walked the railroad tracks from Seward to Fairbanks and was known as the "Mormon Kid". In 1940 he settled in Alaska and had a private law practice until he received his federal appointment from President Dwight D. Eisenhower. He was admitted to practice law before all territorial and state courts, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the U.S. Tax Court and the U.S. Supreme Court. He was a member of the Anchorage and Federal Bar Associations. He was actively involved in private practice with his sons in the Anchorage law firm of McCarrey and McCarrey until the day he died. In 1982 a courtroom was dedicated in his honor and on the day of his funeral flags were flown at half mast in recognition of his great contribution to the state of Alaska.
During World War II, he served in the Signal Intelligence Corps of the u.S. Army at Anchorage. He devoted a lifetime of service to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving three years in the German Austrian mission and in numerous other leadership positions. At the time of his death he was patriarch for the Anchorage Alaska North Stake.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years; sons, J. L. McCarrey III, and David B. McCarrey, Anchorage; daughters, Cam Bohman, Tok, Alaska and Margaret Ann Hales, Nampa, Idaho; brothers, Rulon McCarrey, Idaho Falls, Idaho; Leon McCarrey, Centerville; sisters, Lucille Dunkley, LuR Robins and Marie Dotson, all of Ogden; Elva Hutchinson, Santa Barbara, Calif.; Faye Mulliner, Bremerton, Washington; Marian Yeomans, Homestead, Florida; 19 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.
Memorial services were held February 11 in Anchorage and he was buried with military honors at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the General Missionary Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2206 Culver Place, Anchorage AK 99503.
