J. Winston Alter, 86, died January 13, 1992 at his home in Salt Lake City.

Born March 1, 1905 in Salt Lake City to J. Cecil and Jennie Greene Alter. Married Lois Kidder August 9, 1929 in Salt Lake City. Attended University of Utah and graduated with an Electrical Engineering degree in 1926. He worked for Mountain Bell until his retirement in 1965 as the Utah Cheif Engineer. At an early age he became interested in street cars and trains and built many models including a 1/4 scale model of a locomotive and several cars, which his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren dearly enjoy. He also had a deep love of music and even built his own electric organ. He spent the past 40 years working on a summer home at Bear Lake, which brought much joy to all his family. He invented a headgate for controlling irrigation water in the 1940's and several of these gates are still in service in the Salt Lake area.He is survived by his daughter, Donna Peterson, Dinuba, Calif.; sons, John and Eddie of Salt Lake City; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Dr. Marvin Alter of Glendale, California. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, February 4, at 11:00 a.m., at Evans & Early Mortuary Chapel, 574 East 1st South. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 610 E. South Temple, SLC, Ut. 84102, or charity of your choice. Friends may call one half hour prior to services.
