George Washington's weathered, brown leather wallet was reported missing from a museum on the grounds of the New Jersey state capitol Friday, police said.
The first president's wallet was reported missing from a display case in the Old Barracks Museum, which was a building that housed Hessian troops during the Revolutionary War, state police superintendent Justin Dintino said. The 10-inch-long wallet had a brass clasp inscribed "GW 1775" and contained a 1776 two-thirds dollar bill and a 1779 one-dollar bill.
The wallet has been on loan to the museum since November 1990 from a private collector. The collector is offering a $500 reward for its return.
