MANY U.S. CITY NAMES HAVE INDIAN ORIGINS

The names of many American cities have American Indian origins.

Kalamazoo is a word meaning "boiling pot" used by Potowatami Indians to describe the Kalamazoo River. Oshkosh, Wis., is named after a Menominee chief. Chattanooga, Tenn., is a Creek name meaning "rock rising to a point."Peoria, Ill., originally meant "Land of Great Plenty" to Peoria tribes. Pocatello, Idaho, was named after a Bannock chief.
