Thick black smoke filled the west Salt Lake skyline late Monday morning after a fire broke out at a recycling business.

The fire apparently began when a diesel tank ruptured in the yard of Recycling Corp. of America, 2600 W. 900 South. "Our first units recognized immediately that it was more than they could handle," Salt Lake Fire Capt. Dan Andrus said. A second unit was summoned.Large bundles of recycled newspaper were burning, with the fire spreading to one of the company's buildings. The fire was brought under control just before noon, about 45 minutes after it had been reported.

No damage estimates were available, and investigators were unsure how the tank ruptured.
