A fire Saturday afternoon destroyed about 40 acres of the Powell Slough Wildlife Refuge located on the east shore of Utah Lake between Provo and Orem.

The fire reportedly started at about 2:30 p.m. when high winds spread a nearby farmer's controlled burn into some rushes in the refuge. Firefighters from Orem and Provo responded to the scene, but the swampy conditions prevented them from doing much to stop the blaze. Because the fire could not do much property damage, firefighters decided to let it burn itself out.
