A man opened fire in a city personnel office, killing a woman and wounding two other people before police killed him. News reports said he was looking for his estranged wife.
Leroy Johnson, a 36-year-old unemployed salesman, began shooting a .45-caliber pistol Thursday after being refused confidential information on an individual, said Phoenix Police Detective Leo Speliopoulos.Speliopoulos said Johnson, who was wearing a bulletproof vest under a sport coat, apparently didn't know anyone in the personnel office. "It appears as though the shooting was indiscriminate," he said.
Broadcast reports said Johnson had demanded information about his estranged wife, Judith.
Mrs. Johnson had sought an order of protection against Johnson in December, a month after she left him.
Speliopoulos said two officers on bicycle patrol saw the gunman behind the glass doors of the office and opened fire when he turned as if to shoot, hitting him in the head.
The gunman's vest stopped at least three bullets, said fire Capt. Erik Hoyer.
The dead city employee was identified as Anne Moerder, 56.
Two other city employees, Paula Carroll, 43, and Lora Cash, 35, were listed in serious condition with gunshot wounds.
