Police in Charleston, S.C., who spent two years tracking the "Lowcountry rapist" said they captured a suspect Friday in the 27 attacks on women and girls.

The man, identified as Duncan Richardo Proctor, 29, was injured when his car crashed into a police cruiser and then hit a tree during a police chase along I-26. He was in critical condition at the Medical University of South Carolina, a hospital spokeswoman said.Proctor, of North Charleston, was not immediately charged, but police expected to file multiple counts of rape against him on Saturday, Capt. Chad Caldwell of the North Charleston police said.

"After day and night operation we're confident to say that the serial rapist has been confirmed," Caldwell said. "It's a great day."
