Directions: Follow highway 89 east of Gunnison for about six miles to Nine Mile REservoir. Go two miles past reservoir to Sterling, then east of town on dirt road for about five miles to Six Mile.
Description: Nine Mile is lower elevation lake surrounded by sagebrush and open spaces. Reservoir is about 300 surface acres and is located next to main highway. Six Mile is a new reservoir opened this year. It is small only about 10 surface acres, but is located in beautiful mountain setting of aspens and pinions.
Fish: Rainbow.
Details: Nine Mile is a good place to try boat or float tube. This is a large water and generally good carryover of larger fish. Routinely catch rainbow in the three-to five pound class. Secret is to fish off the bottom, especially in the summer. Six Mile is a new reservoir so fish there will be put-and take.
Notes: Limited camping opportunity at Nine Mile. Better to stay elsewhere and drive to reservoir. Good camping at nearby Palisade State Park, also in nearby towns. Some nice primitive camping spots around Six Mile. Water level at both waters will fluctuate during the summer. No boat ramp at nine Mile, so launching larger boats very difficult. There is a nine-hole golf course at Palisade.
