Paul Baxter, a former NHL tough guy who was an assistant coach with Calgary for three seasons, is leaving the Flames.
General manager Doug Risebrough announced Tuesday that Baxter was being let go because he didn't fit with new head coach Dave King's staff."With the changes that have happened amongst our coaching staff, it became apparent there would be duplication in some coaching roles," Risebrough said.
"We decided to move forward and allow Paul as much opportunity as possible to formulate his future plans."
King, the former head coach of Canada's Olympic team, has already re-signed assistant Guy Charron and is reportedly considering hiring Wayne Fleming, who was King's assistant with the national team.
Baxter, 36, played 13 years in the NHL, ending his career with Calgary in 1987.
He spent two seasons as head coach of the Salt Lake Golden Eagles, the Flames' International Hockey League affiliate, before joining Calgary as an assistant coach in 1989.
