Pat Buchanan, who unsuccessfully tried to wrest the Republican nomination from President Bush, is to undergo heart surgery Friday, a spokesman said Thursday.

"He's having some elective surgery tomorrow morning," spokesman Dan Giroux said. "But that is just that - it is elective."Giroux said the operation is to replace a defective aorta valve and will be performed at the Washington Hospital Center.

He said the defect was discovered about 10 years ago. Buchanan was informed then that he would eventually need surgery.

In April it was decided to have surgery this year, in order to give him time to recover to attend the Republican National Convention in August, Giroux said.

"Other than the defective valve," Giroux said, Buchanan "is healthy."
