Anthony Gomez saw the house at 336 N. 600 West engulfed in flames Saturday night and started yelling, waking occupant John Shank, 44.

"If the neighbor hadn't helped out, we probably would have had a fatality," said Capt. Dan Andrus, Salt Lake City Fire.Investigators said the fire apparently started in the front porch overhang and spread throughout the attic and house, Andrus said.

The home sustained $20,000 damage in the 8:50 p.m. fire.
